My Editor and I! An update on Dark Magic Rising.

We finally have a release date for Dark Magic Rising, which we will share with you very soon. My editor and I have been working very hard and now feel we can work to a deadline.

Dark Magic Rising’s original release date was back in November last year (2015). After undergoing surgery on my spine in May of that year, my editor and I decided to push the date back but never gave ourselves a new goal. This year my editor was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, which gave a reason to some of the health issues she couldn’t overcome. Things started to make sense, however, her health has not improved and due to fatigue and brain fog the editing was at times very slow.

Working alongside someone with fibromyalgia  has taught me patience and a little understanding into living with a chronic illness. I could have taken the work elsewhere for a quicker result. But it’s never been about the speed and is more about the relationship I have with my editor. She not only puts me right when I forget about punctuation or get the words to a sentence muddled up and so on, she injects something into my work that wasn’t there before. We are a team that works well, even if I nag her a little when she is having a low week.

We are planning on hosting a cover reveal within the next few weeks and have decided to put the book up for pre-order from the cover reveal event. This was a huge decision for us and in some sense is a little daunting. We aim to put our best foot forward and simply do the best we can because this is about supporting someone and not just looking them over because they don’t fit in with your time table.

Bamburgh Castle

One of the first tasks, wile holidaying with Mother, is a ‘mad mish’ to find out what is local to our location. Well, just think of my reaction when I cam across Bamburgh Castle!

Many times I have imagined certain locations for Alhanassa. Inspiration has come, mostly from the Internet. There is one particular castle in Torlan that I have had in my head for a long time. Alha’enna is Torlan capital city and was once the seat of the Queen of Alhanassa, before the Great War and The Burning. (You will have to read the books when finished to find out about them). It’s majestic castle stand high on a hill and overlooks the city below but one side of the castle is facing the East Ocean. And today I found it!

I possibly have images on my laptop of this castle, however, to see it for real was breathtaking! We approached it from Seahouses and had no clue it was there. I almost stopped the car just to look. It simply loomed from around five miles away. A beautiful stone castle surrounded by lush green fields, blue sea and whispy white clouds.

We didn’t go in today, there was a triathlon going on and the place was far too busy for Mother’s wheelchair. BUT, we will be spending the day there. Hopefully the rain that started to pour down at 6pm tonight will head off and give us a reasonable day Tuesday or Thursday. (We have two weeks here).

Where Did it all Begin?

Alhannasa, a land of beauty and diversity, created by the Most High Goddess, Bodelia. She planned that her ‘children’ those which will inhabit the world she’d made, would rule the land now the time had come for her to leave. The Immortal Council grew restless with her long absence, she knew her duty could be delayed no longer. Yet she wouldn’t completely abandon that which she had made. She would leave the Lesser Goddesses, her sisters, to watch over Alhanassa. With the aid of their magic, the mortals would surely flourish.

The inspiration for the magical world I called Alhanassa comes from my love of nature. I’m British and I love the British country side, this lush island which I have nowhere near finished exploring, inspires me to put my characters in the places I’ve visited and loved. When describing places I have tried to keep the location I have in mind out of the descriptions. My daughters will often say to me “Hey Mum is that (Insert location name here)?” It makes me smile when they figure it out too. However, the UK doesn’t have vast sand dunes and deserts or rain forests but we do have snow topped mountains, beautiful lakes and lochs, we have rolling hills and patchwork vales. (The featured image is from our holiday in 2013 to Scotland, it’s taken from the camper van window of (I think) the Isle of Sky.)

Another reason for Alhanassa and the Goddesses is our own disturbing history. Continue reading
